Do we matter to God? If He’s so powerful and great, why would He care about a bunch of messed up, weak humans?
This is one of the most common concerns people have about God. If He’s real (and He is) then why would He bother with us? Doesn’t He have better things to do? Or is it possible that He really does care about us?
God does care about us. This is something the scriptures illustrate over and over. For example:
39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
Moses 1:39
God doesn’t just care about us – He loves us so much that our progression and happiness are His most important purposes and goals. Just think, we, humans, matter more to God than anything else.
Let that sink in.
Maybe though, you still wonder if you individually matter to God. And if He does care about you personally, then why?
Why You Matter
Here’s the simple answer – you are literally God’s spirit child. He created you. God is the perfect parent, and His love is unequaled.
But perhaps the best way to illustrate how much you matter to God is to talk about Jesus Christ:
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
God sent Jesus to suffer for your sins, to experience everything that you personally have experienced, and to free you from death and the devil. You didn’t have to do anything to earn God’s offer of Christ. God planned for Christ to come, suffer, and die for you before you ever sinned or struggled yourself.
Do you have to choose to follow Christ to use His infinite Atonement? Yes. But did you have to do anything for Christ and His Atonement to be available for you to choose? No. You are God’s children. That alone is enough for God to offer you a way back to Him.
Simply being His child is enough reason for Him to love you. And He loves you whether you love Him or not. Whether you trust Him or not. Whether you even believe in Him or not.
The fact is, God doesn’t need a special reason to care about you. You are His child. He loves you no matter what.
Why Your Life Matters
Because you are God’s child, He has made sure to give you all the tools you need to receive eternal life. It takes time and effort, but God walks every step with you.
Your life is the chance to return to God. To show your love for Him and to follow Him. Your life gives you the chance to learn, grow, and progress to be the person God sees when He looks at you.
No one else in the world can do what you do. That might sound cliche, but the fact is you are an individual who God knows well. He’s placed you in your life situation for a reason. He knows that no one can live the life He’s given you as well as you can.
Along the way, God helps you gain talents and gives you opportunities to reach out to people, to love them, and to serve. You grow through these opportunities, and the more you do as God asks, the more He can give you.
Life is a probationary period, but that doesn’t mean you’re a prisoner who has to do what you’re told, or else. Instead, you are a beloved child of God who has the chance to grow, learn, and become better.
This isn’t a simple or easy process. It can be rough. You might find yourself wishing that you didn’t have to face the trials you have. You might wonder how God could make you suffer so much when He’s supposed to love you.
But remember: God loves His Son, Jesus Christ, as well. And He asked Jesus to endure the most excruciating pain possible. God knew there was a purpose in Christ’s pain, and He knows that there is a purpose in your pain as well.
And often, when you look back at your life, you find that those painful periods are times that you can be grateful for because you grew so much.
God knows you. He knows your life and your circumstances. Even when things are tough, He’s there to help you through.
Why Your Service Matters
God also knows that you have more ability to help others than you recognize. He sees the ripples that come from your efforts to love and serve God and others.
You might not see the ripples. And because of this, it’s easy to feel like efforts to serve are wasted.
No effort is ever wasted though. You might feel silly giving someone a compliment or offering to help a neighbor, but it can do more for that person than you know. Remember, God knows you, and He knows the person you are helping. He uses your efforts to accomplish more results than you ever see.
Don’t hold on to discouragement. There is a purpose in your actions. And God is proud of you for giving the efforts you give. Every service you give is something that He can work with.
You’re not just His child – you’re His angel, His hands, His instrument. God gives you His power as you do His will and love His children.
God does care. Keep on keeping on, and rely on your faith. His love will support you through every trial and every effort you make.
