Yesterday, my grandmother died. It’s always interesting to me how the death of a loved one can actually strengthen testimony. While it’s still sinking in that she’s gone, and I know that I’m going to miss her a lot in the coming days and years, I’ve also felt so much peace. Part of the reason for that is knowing that she isn’t in pain anymore and that she’s reunited with many family members. But the biggest reasons I feel peace are the same reasons I can find peace each day in my life, no matter what’s going on.
5 Things That Bring Me Peace
1. Knowledge of Christ
Easily the biggest source of peace in my life is the knowledge I have of Christ. His life, His teachings, and His infinite sacrifice for each of us reassure me that we are loved, remembered, and supported each day of our lives. Christ is aware of us, and He knows exactly what we’re going through at any given moment because He Himself has experienced it as well. He chose to suffer and experience our lives so He could come to us in every moment and help us through it.
Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace, the One who can heal, succor, and lift us. I know that He is my Savior and that He loves me. I know that He saved all of us and loves all of us. When we rely on Him, peace can fill our hearts and lives even when we think that peace is an impossibility.
2. God’s Plan of Salvation
I’ve also found that knowing God’s plan of salvation is a huge source of peace as well. Of course, this connects to the knowledge of Christ because, without Christ, the plan couldn’t have worked. Christ chose to fulfill God’s plan, and because He did, we all have the opportunity to grow and progress.
The plan also offers reassurance that there is more to our existence than just this life. We existed as spirits before this life, and after we die we continue to live as spirits in the spirit world. Eventually, we will all be resurrected and will have the opportunity to progress further as immortal eternal beings. We will be reunited with our families and other loved ones. Mortal death is not the end for any of us, and though it hurts to lose a loved one to death, peace comes when we remember that the separation is only temporary.
This plan changes the way I look at both life and death, and it affects how I see the purpose of life. Mortality is only part of our existence, and remembering that can guide us and give us peace when we need it most.
3. Reading the Scriptures
The scriptures are some of the most fulfilling books to read. I find peace when I read scriptures because they teach truth and give me clarity. Anytime I’m feeling particularly frustrated, confused, or afraid, reading the scriptures has almost immediately calmed my mind and heart. They point me back to Christ, remind me of God’s plan, and give me guidance for what to do in my life. I can rely on the scriptures to bring me back to Christ and help me change my heart to better receive Him.
4. Listening to My Religious Leaders
I love listening to the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Every six months we have a General Conference and get to listen to them speak to us. Their words are not only powerful during the Conference but give so much help and peace to me in the six months following as well.
There’s so much to learn from the words of the prophets. They know how to guide us and support us as the world continues to change around us. They speak the words of Christ and lead us under His direction. The words and teachings of my religious leaders bring as much peace and clarity as the scriptures do, and that peace and clarity are so needed in our lives right now.
5. Hope for the Future
Knowing what I know about God’s plan, Christ and His Atonement, and the teachings of prophets, I find a lot of reasons to hope for great things in the future. Hope that God will continue to do His work. That Christ will continue to be with us. And that we can all continue to progress and grow and hold faithful to the time that Christ returns to the earth and all are resurrected.
While we face challenges, loss, and fear in this life, God has promised great things in the future. Hope for those things brings peace as we trust that God will fulfill His promises to us. We can have peace, hope, joy, and more in this life even when things seem hard to bear. And as we continue forward with faith, we will be strengthened to face even more in coming days.
