In life, we have a lot of worries. Responsibilities, deadlines, careers, budgets, family, friends… the list can go on and on. These things do need our attention, at least sometimes. Many of these things are important, good things to work on and care about.
But in the midst of all this, we can sometimes forget the most important thing: God.
The First Commandment
When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, He said, “The first great commandment is to love God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind”(Matthew 22:37). While it’s essential to serve those around us, we have to remember that loving God needs to come first.
When we love God, we’ll learn how to love others better. We’ll feel His love more, understand Him better, and feel that our lives are more balanced. We will see miracles when God is first in our lives.
How to Better Live the First Great Commandment
I think putting God First is a challenge each of us has to figure out in our own lives. With all our unique life situations, we may need to live this in slightly different ways.
But there are some things we should all do to put God first:
Scripture reading is a huge one because we can learn so much about God and come to know Him really well through the scriptures. Prayer, fasting, attending church and the temple are all ways we can worship and remember God constantly in our lives.
But putting God first is a lot more than just doing things that make us feel spiritual. Serving others is actually a way to serve God. So is working hard to do good.
Obedience to His commandments is also a part of putting God first, and along with that, accepting His will no matter what as well. We can follow the example of Christ’s obedience and submission to God each day of our lives.
Following God isn’t always easy. We all face challenges as we do so. And yes, it’s easy to forget to put Him first.
But it is possible. And making those efforts will bring great power and goodness into our lives.
